Historically, the "COM" generic top level domain has been the most
widely used and well known TLD. Many companies have paid a huge premium
to purchase a short, meaningful and memorable ".com" domain name. (e.g. business.com, money.com).
Unfortunately most good "COM" domains are long gone. As a
result people are
looking for domain names in other generic (gTLD) and country specific (ccTLD) top
level domains.
The Internet domain registrar for each country normally provides a tool
to search for available domain names.
The ".eu" domain (European Union), which was recently launched,
immediately became extremely popular. It is not quite feasible that
this ccTLD will one day rival its "COM" cousin.
Regardless of the TLD that one chooses, a website under any TLD is
accessible anywhere in the world. As a result, many individuals and companies are
opting for a short, catchy domain name under ccTLD or a newly release gTLD.
